Guru Nanak always indicated that one should earn his living through honest means. There is a saying: "If you haven't worked hard for the day, you should not eat for the day".
A truthful and honest living is one which is earn't by the sweat of one's brow in a legal manner, whether it be working in the farm, or working in the office.
Why is it so important to have a truthful living? The reason why honest work is so important, because it is a means to control the mind through action with positive values. Money earn't by causing suffering to others directly or indirectly is can never be the basis of a nourishing spiritual or mental life.
An empty mind is a devil's playground. If you don't keep your mind engaged in positive actions based on positive values and company, it will fall towards negative actions, negative values and company, due to temptation, frustration, boredom or desperation.
One should not live as a parasite to society. One should live with dignity, compassion, humility and have something to give to society, through influence at work, charity, and be a striving example of a perfect human being, so that others can benefit through one's example. One person's commitment to values, integrity, empathy/compassion, and spirituality can affect many others who are in search of the way or a positive role model, especially at work.
This benefits one self, other employees, customers, the employer, and the shareholder.
