11.11.11 - Change the without from the within

ZEN
Picture "ZEN" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney
"The time has come to turn your heart into a temple of fire. Your essence is gold hidden in dust. To reveal its splendor, you need to burn in the fire of Love." --Rumi

This short verse tells us that we are gold hidden in dust, our True or Buddha nature, is hidden in the dust of this body...

It says to discover it you must burn your ego in the fire of love...love for yourself, love for your family, love for your community, love for the world, love for the divine...

It is 11.11.11, does this signify a change is required?...I think the change required has always been in the now, in the present...regardless of the date...

So let now change the without by changing the within...

Happy Diwali Everyone...

Candles
Picture "Candles" kindly provided by Adam Tinworth

Diwali is the festival of light, I really think  of it as a festival celebrating enlightenment...

What is enlightenment but a rediscovery of our own light, a remembrance of the divinity that we hold inside of us, something so precious, something we have long forgotten, the silent inner flame lives, because without it we would not be alive, thirsting for that chance, waiting patiently to vanquish the darkness and emptiness of our own minds, our own ignorance, our own lives...

May the light that is in our hearts shine so bright that it can be seen from space, may this light touch the wick in others through examples of our own compassion, through our own faith, through our own discipline.

Slowly but surely, the power of our own intrinsic goodness will come out benefiting us and all around us...and for this for me is the true meaning of Diwali.

Wishing my dear readers, a enlightening Diwali...

Why do we ignore our most important assets?

Spirit + Nature
Picture "Spirit + Nature" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

It strikes me why we routinely ignore our most important assets, ourselves, our body, our emotions, our minds, our spirit.  Its almost like all different aspects of ourselves are living in different parts of the same house but not knowing or being intimate with each other.  Look around you, there is plenty of evidence, how many people stay in the current moment, witnessing with the full attention what is happening?

Take our bodies for example, in the Gym most people are either listening to music, watching TV, or reading a magazine rather than paying attention to their bodies while exercising.  Even the motive for Gym is mostly to have a body that others might find attractive...There is no harm in trying to look good, I must say, but I was more questioning the motive for people to go to the Gym, it seems to be more to look good (to appease the Ego), rather than to pay close attention to what the body needs (to know thyself)

I really liked Eckhart Tolle's comment on this in his book "The Power of Now":
The more consciousnesses you bring into the body, the stronger the immune system becomes. Its is as if every cell awakens and rejoices.  The body loves your attention. It is also a potent form of self-healing. Most illness creep in when you are not present in the body. If the master is not present in the house, all kinds of shady characters will take up residence there. When you inhabit your body it will be hard for unwanted guest to enter

A simple "mental body scan" is a great accessible method to get in touch with your body taking only 10-15 minutes a day...Paying attention to your body, emotions, thoughts pays large dividends, managing stress is free, energizing and pleasurable, yet we don't seem to have the time of day for it.

Don't sacrifice your piece of mind, health for anyone else...everyone has the obligation to put self leadership first, which naturally leads to real leadership...

An average person with less than average ability....

Buddha Mind
Picture "Buddha Mind" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

Mahatma Gandhi Ji once said:
I claim to be no more than an average person with less than average ability.  I do not have a shadow of doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have, if he or she would make the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith...

Most people don't realize the innate abilities that is present in them already.  I like to think that everything is possible, but what separates you from what is possible is the time, faith and peseverance.  I was at TEDxPennQuarter this week and David Kord Murray gave account of his life, and said the single most important lesson he learnt was "being able to get up and try again after being kicked to the ground".

What might wander which endevour is worth pursuing? I say the only one is to know thyself...If you say that you already do, then you have already limited yourself to what you know about yourself....The relation between you and yourself, and you and the world is tied together so intricately, that it is almost impossible tear them apart...

So don't stop believing, don't stop dreaming, don't stop trying for a better future for yourself and the world around you...Don't doubt for a single moment that you don't have it in you...

A spoonful of salt

Buddha's Eagle
Picture Buddha's Eagle kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

We often look at our problems as insurmountable...however if we look deeper, and expand our consciousness, they are really quite inconsequential.

There is a lot to be grateful for if you look carefully, even suffering has a purpose, to make you grow stronger, to make you grow wiser, to drive you to your real self otherwise you will just be too complacent.  We often can't see around the corner, yet in retrospect, everything leading up to now seems to makes sense, even so called mistakes...

I love this beautiful piece of writing by Jack Kornfield in his book "The Art of Forgiveness, Lovingkindess and Peace", there is a lot of depth in this few lines.  My spiritual mentor always said "through meditation mountains become molehills", reading this I know what that means:
If you put a spoonful of salt in a cup of water
It tastes very salty
If you put a spoonful of salt in a lake of fresh water
the taste is still pure and clear.

So it is with us, if our minds are filled with the pettiness of everyday, the garbage of the media, our own struggles for power, what else do we expect but suffering, on the other hand, if we build in the practice of daily meditation, and experience that sense of expansion, the boundaries of the ego melt away, the joy in being and giving become reality...problems sort themselves out, and we will be in peace...

Steve Jobs - life is short and not in your control, live it with love, and to your dreams and ideals!

LONDON - JUNE 15: (FILE PHOTO) Steve Jobs, Ch...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
I am greatly sadden by Steve Job's death :(, his legacy for innovation, leadership and human spirit will never be forgotten.

From his legendary speech he said:

life is short and not in your control (death is waiting),live it with love, and to your dreams and ideals!

Steve did that, he lived with love, true to his ideals and fulfilled his dream, we are very much indebted to him for many innovations we take for granted today.

Following is a statement released from Apple echoing the same message:

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," Apple said in a statement announcing Jobs' passing.

"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."
Steve present 3 captivating stories in his legendary speech to illustrate the his love, ideals and passion:
1. Trust that the dots will connect in the future...
2. Do what you love, life is too short to waste your time...
3. Remembering your mortality helps you prioritize, and live your values truest to you, practice humility, love and forgiveness..

We will miss you Steve Jobs, RIP, our thoughts are with your friends and family, your struggles, and triumphs will always be an inspiration to us all...:(

The Pregnant Pause

Foot constantly on the Pedal
In today's hectic world, it seems everyone has got their "foot on the pedal" constantly, everything is go, go, go!  From eating at ones desk at work to not even acknowledging a someone walking in the opposite direction.  We are all too "busy", one never has the time to do anything!

I think personally that we are scared of inactivity or we have distorted views about what would happen to us if we were a bit more balanced.

The Pregnant Pause
I like the term "Pregnant Pause", because it implies that the pause is not just an empty pause, it is going to give birth to something, its full of potential!

"Pregnant Pause" implies that the pause is not an empty pause, it is going to give birth to something, its full of potential!

As with Yin (Rest) and Yang (Activity), hitting the pause button is important for almost everything.  Its important not to neglect the natural pauses that happen in your life, the pauses are just as important as the activity.

Don't neglect the natural pauses that happen in your life, the pauses are just as important as the activity.

In giving speeches, a pregnant pause, allows the audience to let important points sink in, in conversations it allows a natural point for think, and others to come in.

Holidays allow a pause button on the high pressures of every day life.  Sabbath is a traditional pause for Jews, I think its great tradition, just to have a day of rest with family for that quality time for bonding to happen.

In Bowen Therapy, muscle stimulation, is alternated with periods of inactivity for the body to check and heal itself.

In Qi Gong, stillness concentrates the Qi, in Yoga the mountain or the corpse pose, allow the body to rest in between poses, I believe there must be a healing element like Bowen Therapy.  The most enjoyable part of a yoga session is the 5-10 minute at the end in Corpse Pose (Savasna)

Savasana offers the possibility of “…every day, a little ‘bit dying.” Pattabhi Jois

If today was your last day
We all need to pause and reflect and die a bit everyday, imagine if it was your last day would you take time to hit the pause button, and think through what is most important in your life, how the day has gone, what you have done right, what have you done wrong, what would you like to change?

Here is the chorus of one of my favourite songs by Nickelback:

If today was your last day
And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
Donate every dime you have?
Would you call old friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories
Would you forgive your enemies?
Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you finally fall in love
If today was your last day

Peace,

Kirpal

A Fathers Day Prayer...

Buddha's Light
Picture "buddha's light" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney
Oh holy father, one true lord, beyond time & space
Creator and sustainer of everything
Lost is this soul in this alien land
Confused and bewildered, clutching at straws of ego and ignorance
Oh holy father, only you know your mysterious ways
Like a kite pulling some close, letting others soar in the winds of creation
The string is always in your hand, without which no life is possible
Oh holy father, when will you pull your kite back
Which you let fly so, so long ago :(

Happy Fathers Day Dads,

Peace,

Kirpal

The joy I seek

Spirit + Nature
Picture "Spirit + Nature" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney
The joy I seek does not rest in coins of gold
Nor can it be found in fame or power
Tempting they are, I must say
But tell me friend, how much does your soul weigh in gold?
Unlike first class, death allows no baggage

The joy I seek does not rest in pleasures of the senses or the stomach
After all how much can one eat?
Overeating is just as uncomfortable as not eating!
What to say about those poor creatures that are slaughtered without thought, who will bring them justice?

The joy I seek lies not in scholarly knowledge
All that does is blow up my ego!

The joy I seek lies in the dormant potential of humility, love, peace and compassion that lies in reach of all of us
So near, yet so far
Like a statue in the stone waiting for only what is not needed to be chipped away
Chip away what is not needed by keeping only that which is kind and is of purpose

Peace,

Kirpal

The Art of Possibility

Its not often that you get blown away twice in one week. Today I was lucky enough to go a two hour talk held by Benjamin Zander.  I must say the talk was absolutely mind-blowing.

Most people despair or get angry at the face of problems. But Zander says that all things are possible to solve simply by looking our frame of reference and unchallenged assumptions.  It does imply that we need to re-look at the hidden assumptions that cloud our judgement, and look in the realm of possibility by revisiting and challenging these unconscious assumptions.

He gave an example by getting people to sing happy birthday to a audience member, then he progressed with the level of engagement of the audience, until the end where the whole hundreds of people in the room, were literally showering the woman on a stool with all their heart and soul singing happy birthday with the upmost passion with full arms extended!  You can imagine what an experience that was like!

You see we only know how to sing happy birthday in a single monotonous boring tune, not with all our heart body and soul.  Unless we push ourself to the possibility of doing so we won't be able to do so.  Take this further we are only acting out the motions in life, we are in fact living our lives as Zombies, half dead!

Imagine if we opened ourselves up to the potential of infinite wisdom, love and compassion that is within the reach of each of us, what could happen to us, those around us and the world at large?

When I started this blog, I had no idea that I would be writing poetic verses, hell, I had no idea that I could even write, but it evolved because I opened myself to possibility that maybe I could make a difference to myself by writing and hopefully others. The writings became poetic because I could not get any more effective way to pack a punch with my message, there is only so much you can convey in words without the support of body language.

At the end I said to him while he was signing my book "Why be the wave when you can be the ocean" to which he burst out laughing as that was what his speech was all about, unlocking the potential for us as individual to reach fulfillment personally to benefit our families, our community, our work and our planet!

Peace,

Kirpal

The winds of time blow swiftly

A Buddha in the Rain
Picture "A Buddha in the Rain" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under CC
Oh friend, the winds of time blow very swiftly
The compass of the whispering inner voice is there to tell you where to go
It needs not a steady hand but a steady mind
What's worse than dying in the sea of confusion?
Oh friend, bring up the sails of meditation and catch these swift winds of time
Use the rudder of intention to guide you to your destination
Your destination lies in the journey itself
Waste not the priceless moments that can never be re-lived

Peace,

Kirpal

Life is but a fleeting moment

The Door to New Directions
Picture "The Door to New Directions" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

Oh friend, life is but a fleeting moment, over before you know it
Those ambitions held so dear to your heart now, will mean nothing then
Precious opportunities of giving and receiving love would all be but lost then
Oh friend, hands of time only move forward, never backwards
There is no future, other than the one we are making
Oh friend, make every priceless moment count
Live the life you ought to life, be the person you ought to be
Sculpt yourself with thoughts of love and compassion, and watch peace unfold... .. .

Peace,

Kirpal

Grace where art thou now?

Buddha in my Mind - B3
Picture "Buddha in my Mind" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under CC

Grace where art thou now?
We pray for your return
We have lost my way
Confused and bewildered, we stare
Grace we long for your return
A guiding light in times of darkness
The ways of truth, love, and devotion are long forgotten
There are different gods now
Gods of violence, technology, and revenge and ignorance
Grace where art thou now?
Rescue us from this suffering
Show us the peace, we once had a very distant long time ago
Where love, compassion and truth were normal, not abnormal
Where real beauty was of the soul and mind, not just skin deep
Where all life was precious, even the enemy's
Grace, we long for your return, ever so deeply

Peace,

Kirpal

Why waste time on reflections of shadows

Dzogchen
Picture "Dzogchen" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under CC

Why invent things in your mind because of fear?
When the truth can be your best teacher and ally...

Why hide your intention from others?
If your intentions are pure and righteous ...

Why fear the shame of being wrong?
When it is only in trying and failing, that learning happens,
it is only the ego that fears...

Why hoard more than what we need?
When we have only so much capacity to consume...

Why yearn for so much knowledge?
When all knowledge is already there,
waiting to be unlocked by listening, reflecting and waiting...

Why waste time on reflections of shadows?
When life itself deserves your full attention... .. .

Peace,

Kirpal

Oh dear soul what has thou become?

He is the Moon
Picture "He is the Moon" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

Oh dear Soul what has thou become?
Clouded by a thousand thoughts,
Misled by a thousand desires,
Lost in the carnival of life,

Oh dear Soul what has thou become?
Why hold on to false riches that only drown you in sorrows?
Why do you walk into a prison of your own making and throw away the key?
A slave of the passions,
A case of mistaken ego identity,
A king or queen by right, living as a pauper by choice,

Claim what is yours, why waste another moment?
Drop the facade of the ego,
Embrace yourself as a drop of the divine,
Reflect on the emptiness of thoughts, emotions and impressions,
Turn your high beams of awareness on the thieves in your life,
Let their powers over you fade away,

Oh dear Soul, remember
Oh dear Soul, please remember what you once were
Oh dear Soul, please remember, remember, remember... .. .

Peace,

Kirpal

The Elephant's Goad

Hello Ganesha
Brilliant Picture "Hello Ganesha" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under Creative Commons
The Elephant's Goad or an Ankusha, is a sharpened goad with a pointed hook which is used to train and control an Elephant.  An Elephant can easily overpower the rider, however it remains in control of the rider by the Goad, without it it would pretty much run rampant.

Imagine a Elephant doing whatever it wants in your backyard, not a pretty sight or smell for that matter :)...Yet this is what we do with our minds, we let it wander free like the Elephant, seeking whatever gratification it likes;of the senses, or of the Ego.  The comparison of the mind with an animal is a apt one, as animals do not possess the same sense of discrimination as Humans.  Like the Elephant, the mind can be directed with a Goad.  The Goad however is not suppression, opposition or force, this would be impossible in the long run, it is much more subtle.

The Goad for the Mind is Values, Satsang, Mindfulness, Intention & Pre-Occupation

Values
Values are deep seated beliefs ingrained in us. Values can be positive or negative.  Only positive values will ever give us any lasting happiness such as Appreciation, Gratitude, Compassion, Honesty and Integrity.

Practicing values is critical to learning or internalizing values.  There is absolutely no doubt that one will fail many times in learning anything new, but each time a failure happens, and there is an increase in awareness if we allow it, and the motivation for change is strengthened, until one day it becomes automatic.

Only peace and happiness will follow positive values.  Besides healing benefits of positive values, these values stay permanently with you as Sanskaras (deep mental impressions) that benefit you in future lives.

One may be able to change their values by repeating and contemplating the values that they are trying to imbibe, also surrounding themselves with images, sounds and people who symbolize them (Satsang)

Satsang
What happens if are working with sandalwood, you start smelling like it.  This is Sat (Truth) sang (Company). There is no more powerful way of control your mind, then to immerse yourself with the company of those who are in tune with themselves.  The opposite is also true also.

Peers are a very powerful agent of change, first thing in learning anything is to imitation of the people around you.  It may not be a person, it could even be autobiography of great figures such as Gandhi & Yoganda, however this is much more difficult, the physical company accelerates learning. There is a direct mental transfer between people when they are open to it. The words of my Spiritual Mentor still ring in my ears, many years on!

It may be hard to find true spiritual people, but they usually flock together so you should be able to find them. The resources section has some good organisations like Bahai, Art of Living etc...

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a broad term, but it means that you are fully engaged in the present moment with a specific intent (goal, purpose or outcome) in mind.  Apart from the natural benefits of deep listening and contemplation of the present situation, it is actually a means to direct the mind to stop it going astray.  Mindfulness stops the mind from wandering by keeping it focused on the Intent.  See my last blog for more details.

Intention
The goal, purpose, or outcome desired is actually an intention of the mind.  Intention has been shown to statistically alter the outcome of random number generation (Princeton University).  Again intentions can be positive, negative or even missing due to laziness.  They usually come out of our Sankara's.  One can set a clear intent at any level or any situation, for a day, for a meeting, for a yoga session etc. This keeps the mind pre-occupied  towards a  intended direction, instead of wandering aimlessly picking up the next thing that comes it fancy.

Pre-Occupation
Once we have a clear intention, we should follow it until it gets completed, this stops us getting sidetracked.  If we want to get from DC to Florida in 12 hours, then we won't be taking hour long breaks on the way.  One can practice following intention right through to completion on small daily goals then work towards bigger , more ambitious intentions (experiment, it is your mind after all).  As with everything best to start small to build confidence in oneself.  If we are engaged in something positive it is less likely that we will engage in something negative, that is why work, community service etc  is so important.

Once a strong intention is set, the co-ordinates are entered into the GPS of our mind, all we have to do is follow the instructions that come out.   If we don't enter the right co-ordinates where will we end up? probrably not to far from where we left or even further from our destination.

Usually a clear intention is sufficient, the body and mind  has to follow.  Spiritual adepts work miracles through intention alone.

Closing

It is said that one who masters her mind, masters the universe (Guru Granth Sahib).  Treasures are there like diamonds in many religions, yoga and qi gong techniques, however reading or writing about it out does not mean anything, what matters is that one tries to practice it, habits are only established with practice, and that is which differentiates us.

Master your elephant mind with the use of the goad, it is one of the few endeavors that will pay much dividends in every aspect of your life....

Peace,

Kirpal

Why is it that new year's resolutions are always broken!

Ever wonder why New Year's resolutions are always broken!

Will power although a start in the right direction, is just that, a start.  How many people start off with great ideas and never finish!

The reason is very simple:  You don't think about what you what to change enough!

If you want something then you need to think about it enough, if you want to think about something enough, then you need the environment and company of what you want to in front of you enough.

Our degree of commitment is directly related to the degree of repetition we do about what ever we want.

Everyone is capable of repetition even Criminals, but the question is can anyone repeat what they want to change for the better!

Wishing you a Happy New Year Ahead, may it be a year of change for yourself and those around you for the better, may you value the things that matter most, and know that what matters most is the quality of love that you give, and receive, and treasure every single moment of your life...

Now I am off to the Sikh Temple with my family  in Virginia
