The Same Parents

Sample of Lyrics

We all had the same parents
Many million years ago
Why can't we live in freedom
Without hunger, with no war?

At the beginning we all had
One mother and one father
That's where we're descending from
I don't, I don't understand why so much hate

Between races, and religions
It's mad, insane
I don't understand
Why it has to be like that?

See me here..

"A human being is part of a whole called by us the Universe. A part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of our consciousness. This delusion is a prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires, and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of understanding and compassion, to embrace all living creatures in the whole of nature and its beauty." ~ Albert Einstein

Halloween brings in 7 billion people on Earth...

It is predicted that Earth will hit the 7 billion population mark on Halloween day...The future is uncertain and dangerously fragile...Sort of ironic don't you think?

I look at the faces of my kids, and I wander what the future will hold for them...I ask myself, what can I do to prepare myself, what can I do to prepare the ones I love...I ask myself this question over and over again? The path ahead will be rocky, its best to prepare oneself for it now...

Please explore http://7billionactions.org/, it is a great way to raise awareness about the world around us, as we reach this historic milestone.  The world around us is intricately tied up with the world in us...to change outside, we must change inside...lead simpler lives, inculcate compassion, curb our minds, contemplate, meditate...

A glimmer of hope

Buddha Bridge
Picture "Buddha Bridge" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

What strikes me today, is the amount of distilled knowledge available on meditation, in plain simple English, really good clear explanations, crisp and practical advice.  I don't feel personally that this is substitute for good teachers and company, but it sure does help!

For example a long time I did not know the difference between awareness and thinking.  I found the following piece of writing really interesting from "Meditation An In Depth Guide":

Awareness is silent, whereas thinking creates a commentary in words and pictures.
Awareness is receptive and formless, whereas thinking is active, and has form in words and pictures
Awareness is always in the present. We can only imagine the future because it does not exist, it has not arrived yet. Thinking via the use of memory and imagination, projects into the future or past.  The bird sings a sweet note, and then the thinking mind says, "Sweet birdsong", but the note is already gone.

Awareness is still and unchanging; it is the same now as it was five minutes ago and five years ago. Thinking, by contrasts always changing (like all the contents of awareness)
Awareness, being silent, is also by its nature accepting and nonjudgmental. Again thinking labels, interprets and evaluates.  Thinking is frequently judgement; it struggles to understand, solve, improve or fix things. Awareness is the capacity to simply observe what is in this current moment.

Not too long ago, all of this knowledge was locked up in the minds of yogis, meditation masters...Not that they did not want to share it, it was probably that they could only do so in their own culture, in their own language...People from the west flew to the east to gain access to these teachings.

What we are seeing is a merging of minds, through technology the world is no longer a segregated place...Through social media, one can gain insights that effect real change...

A glimmer of hope appears for the world at large to change for the better...through grace many teachers are emerging, like phoenixes rising from the ashes...

VegDC Fest Yesterday

I went to the VegDC VegFest with my kids yesterday.  I never really had any trouble convincing them to be vegetarian, I always just said, "The animals are our friends, that's why we don't eat them".  We enjoyed the cooking demo and talk by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, she has got a great blog, she is really quite hilarious on stage.  I joined the VegDC as a member and got a overly tight T-Shirt, which my son said makes me look muscly, I think he was being extremely kind with his words :)  I was a bit disappointed with the food, if you want to turn people into vegetarians, you really need better tasting food on sale!  My daughter complained to my wife when we got home, my wife responded "You have spoilt taste buds!".

They say if you want to see what a person is, you simply have to see what goes into the mouth and what comes out of the mouth.

The quality of a person's thoughts usually manifests in the what the person desires to eat, or what the person says.   Iyenger talks about building sensitivity, sensitivity to your own body, your own thoughts, your own feelings, the implications of your actions and integrating this through yoga.

You will find that yogis or meditators who build this sensitivity start practicing self leadership, they start being more in tune with the intelligence of the soul.  I like to think that everyone has an internal golden compass, that tells you always what the right things to do and say.  Its a matter of being able to connect with yourself, listen, and then act.  Yoga after all is about integrating spirit, mind, body into one.

Back to the being vegetarian, diet is a sensitive topic, instead of talking about vegetarian, lets talk in general first and circle back around.  Every action that we take has direct implications on the world around us.  Lets take a simple example.

Suppose I have a friend who is selling stolen goods, I could play ignorant, and still buy the goods for a bargain. Even though I have not stolen the goods, when I buy them and use them, I create a market for more goods to be stolen.  On the other end someone is impacted, as their hard earned money is lost, and they are hurt by the violation of privacy, and fear what else could have happened in the process.   Even though I was not involved, by purchasing the stolen goods, I am now indirectly directly involved.

This is the same with vegetarianism, you get indirectly directly involved with the slaughter of millions of animals. This places an enormous tax on our environment, in terms of competing land, food, water requirements and production of methane.  Methane is 21 times stronger as a greenhouse gas than CO2.  100 million tons of methane is produced every year 85% of this comes from livestock.  There are far reaching implications of your actions, just by what you choose to put in your mouth!

Also worth a read is the China Study, which statistically proves that eliminating animal proteins from your diet switches off cancer cells somehow.

Please consider reducing or eliminating meat from your diet, it could save your life, it could save the world!

Peace,

Kirpal

The writing is on the wall....

Buddha
Picture "Buddha" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney
The following recent statement by Eric Allen Bell really resonated with me, and moved me to write this post:
"The writing is on the wall. When we break free from a reactive state of consciousness, we are free, think and feel and imagine ahead of the curve. We know what is on the horizon. If you don't, then you are still operating from a reactive state of mind. The best use of your energy and mine is to plan for the world we are consciously creating - the world we are to contribute to once this inevitable collapse occurs. And it is all going down. This big arrogant Titanic has hit an iceberg because of the quality of consciousness that was at the wheel. Some of us will swim to freedom and we will take as many with us as we can."

The writing is on the wall!

From various metaphysical studies, law of karma, the Secret, and even Plato's Theory of Form, James Allen's classic book "As A Man Thinketh", there is an accepted philosophy that the physical world takes form around the mental world. I often call this the Mirror Effect. I have witnessed this myself, when I look back at my life, I can correlate outer conditions manifesting to inner conditions.

Now lets look at the quality of consciousness all around us at a global level.  Assuming we can somehow score the quality of thoughts or consciousness all around us using the following points as an example (a very simple model I know :)
1. positive vs negative
2. focused vs distracted
3. living in present vs the past or the future
4. solitude and reflection vs an endless stream of distractions
5. thoughtfulness vs ignorance
6. compassion vs selfishness

What is your score for the yourself, your family, your country, the world? Assuming it is very low for the world, which I think it is.  Assuming the Mirror Effect holds true, and 90% of the world is like this, what else do you expect other than the current failing conditions in the world from all aspects, economic, social, environmental.

What else do get you get but garbage when the quality of the world's consciousness is garbage at an aggregate level.  Don't get me wrong everyone has a right to live their live as they choose, that is their God given right, but sooner or later the law of karma or natural consequence kicks in, and you only get what you put in.

So we are at a critical cross roads in the world today, I was quite skeptical of the Mayan Calender prediction that the world was going to end in 2012, but my gosh it is getting scary out there! Just look at the natural disasters, the financial crisis, the social injustice.

One needs to make a choice today, do something about it or bury your head in the sand. Doing something about it is lifting your own level of consciousness, and that you have to do by yourself, no one can do it for you. When you do this, you lift others around you, and they do the same for others around them.  Soon a chain reaction takes place bringing much needed change around the world.  Heed the writing on the wall!

Doing something about it is lifting your own level of consciousness

Kirpal

Bracing for the Storm...

Its been a dark gloomy day, yesterday we stocked up on gas burners, Sharon cleared up 1/2 the shelf of the portable gas cans :). Our freezers are stacked with ice packs. DC is on the outside edges of the hurricane, it has still be declared as a state of emergency. The rain is starting to belt down now, I can hear it as I write, the trees are swaying with the wind, heavy gusts of winds threaten to bring branches down.

I feel sorry for those who don't have the comforts of home today, we do take a lot of things for granted. First it was the earthquake this week, now a hurricane, what next? In my last post I shared my thoughts on the dramatic climate changes all over the world.

See the physical aspect of what we see is always the tip of the ice berg.  The bottom of the ice berg that cannot be seen is 2/3 of the ice berg.  Simarly consciousness manifest itself physically as the tip of the ice berg individually and globally, what is driving the physical is the mental undercurrents underneath.  Ask yourself what sort of consciousness is present in the world today on a mass level?  Is it kind? is it compassionate? is it thoughtful?  For a blessed minority it is, however for most it is not.

What else can we expect but chaos from mindless thinking? Unfortunately peace and order only comes from mindful and compassionate thinking.  That is the law of cause and effect, the law of Karma.  Leaving the lap of Creator, we are all bound by time, space, our actions.  You may say what has climate change got to do with consciousness, unfortunately suffering caused directly or indirectly can't just be swept under the carpet, the law of Karma is just, precise, unforgiving.  Everything is connected, studies in Princeton University has shown that intention has an influence on random events, add on this global warming, pollution, nuclear disasters, oil-spills, you get my drift.

What else can we expect but chaos from mindless thinking? Unfortunately peace and order only comes from mindful and compassionate thinking.  That is the law of cause and effect, the law of Karma.

A qoute follows from one of my past post:
Peace is in Heaven, it needs to be reflected through our actions on Earth...
Compassion is in Heaven, it needs to be reflected through our actions on Earth...
Thoughtfulness is in Heaven, it needs to be reflected  through our actions on Earth...
Purpose is in Heaven, it needs to be reflected  through our actions on Earth...
Love is in Heaven, it needs to be reflected through our actions on Earth...

I end with a native american quote and a silent prayer for grace to help us on this difficult road ahead for us and future generations.

I do not think the measure of a civilization is how tall its buildings of concrete are, but rather how well its people have learned to relate to their environment and fellow man

If only everything in life could be bought!

Zen Ox - IV
Picture "Zen Ox" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under CC

The attention starved world is to busy to notice what is happening
Information and technology overflow do nothing more than confuse us
They are much more clever than us, they know more about how our minds work, than we do our own
Happiness is sold out of a bottle, mental endurance from caffeine
Health out of a pill, corpses packaged as food
All but poison in disguise but who cares, everyone line up in droves
Even spirituality is sold as a service
If only everything in life could be bought!
Millionaires would live forever in bliss, instead they suffer as much or more than the common man

Open your eyes to what is happening
Everything you need is already there with you, right here, right now
The creator is not so ignorant as to one's needs
The present deserves your attention, more than any wishful scheme
Simplify your your life, desires, thoughts and actions and be in peace with yourself

What sort of world is this?

Observer
Picture "Who is dreaming" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney under CC

What sort of world is this?
Where no one has the time to smile, and words have no substance, and thoughts have no depth.
Where eyes and ears are stuffed with useless information, and mouth with food unidentifiable to nature.
Where the band-aid of pills are prescribed instead of healthy habits, thoughts, diet and exercise.
Where one false world is created on top of another, as if it wasn't confusing enough to start with.
Like rats in a ferris wheel we are played, what different are we to these rats and animals in the zoo.
We are held captive not by cages of steel, but cages of ego, addiction, sloth and ceaseless desires.

Oh friend, its time to wake up.
You have slept for too long, wake from this fatal slumber.
Give up these foolish pursuits, associate with those who can see through these distractions.
Tune into yourself, sharpen the edges of your mind, cut out the waste from your life.
Trust yourself to follow the path of truth, your inner voice never stops guiding you.

Peace,

Kirpal

Earth Our Mother

Earth Full South Pacific

Picture "Earth Full South Pacific" kindly provided by FlyingSinger under CC

Today I was Toastmaster of the day.  I wanted to finish off the Toastmaster session with a quote on Earth Day.

The whole experience today was amazing, the whole session flowed from one speaker to another.  The second speech was very interesting, it talked about how there is no-one talking any more, everyone is just in their own world listening to their MP3 players, he basically said we are in the brink of catastrophic Armageddon, and we would be totally oblivious about it!

I concluded the Toastmaster session with a "Thought of the Day" with some writing I did a while ago.

Then I finished with a Native American Indian Quote:
We don't own the land, we borrow it from our children

We face difficult times ahead, cracks are starting to show in the world, the fate of the world lies in a fragile "scale of justice".  The only thing that can save us is Grace and Self and Global Compassion.  Either way anything that will happen is a Self-Balancing act.

I feel strongly about the relationship to self and its implication on the world around us, the major problems in the world is basically a lack of spirituality and self control.  We all have a part to play starting with ourselves, and gaining control of our own minds, senses and desires.  Our lives and demands can be a lot simpler than they are today.  Sharing of resources can be done a lot more evenly as it is today.  Mindfulness and sensitivity to the world around us are all qualities that we can develop today.

Earth our mother, nourishes us and sustains us, lets look after her, with the equal amount of love she bestows on us... .. .

Please give me the strength not to judge it... .. .
I reflect on the grace that is bestowed... .. .
Please give me the humility to recognize it... .. .
I reflect on the time that is given to us... .. .

Toastmaster Speech 5 Reflections - 1000 Origami Cranes

I was happy with the speech not that I delivered a perfect speech, but that I met the goal of meeting the time constraint, and I got lots of constructive feedback, and witness some amazing things in the process all while battling a migraine and the flu.

Mistakes stick better than success in my head, the key is to find the root cause of it and learn from it, and raise your awareness of it.  Being in a room full of great speakers, learning is accelerated, because they pick up on little things straight away, and give you the feedback in a positive manner.

Migraine and the Flu
My head was pounding in the morning, it was really hurting, I don't take pain killers.  Migraines have settled down but I think it was the change of weather and the flu that was triggering it.  An amazing thing happened, after the speech the migraine disappeared completely.  I think thats got something to do with a release of emotions through the speech, the speech was about hope, healing and compassion.  Positive messages are always healing, I witness this first hand today!

Imperfect delivery
The speech was far from perfect, I stumbled on the opening, I was fumbling around with the paper, sniffling, however it was heartfelt, I was there in the speech, and people felt it.

The audience can feel your mindfulness, and your concern about your message, regardless of your preparation, I am finding issues to date with that of the techniques, the techniques are what needs to be refined by continuously practicing, and getting further feedback until new patterns are formed.

I was really pleased with the constructive feedback:
- Get straight to the attention getter
- No fumbling my notes, next time I will only have one sheet of paper, with some supporting slides if needed
- Open with core intent after attention getter
- Have 3-5 core points
- Have smooth transition between the points that supports the core intention of the speech
Body language needs to remove anything graceful
- Paper distractions
- Kept looking at the watch

On preparing the speech, repeat the intention, the structure, then imagine yourself going through the speech in the time, alert, focused.

Mindfulness in Delivery
Mindfulness involves opening yourself up to observe everything around you, but an anchor is required.  That anchor is the eye contact of the audience.  Keep eye contact like a magnet, and then just deliver the speech without judgement.

But when you are aware of speaking, it starts becoming art...
This is bound to happen if you speak with awareness. Then every gesture, every word has a beauty of its own. There is grace.

Toastmaster Speech 5 - One Thousand Origami Cranes

Picture kindly provided by Great Beyond

The story of Sadako Sasaki

Imagine a little girl 12 years old playing one day in a playground, after having recurrent spells of dizziness, she collapses.  Her parents take her to the hospital; she and her family are told she has leukemia with only one year to live.

Her name is Sadako Sasaki. Her best friend, Chizuko visits her in hospital and gives her a golden origami crane, as a symbol of good luck and hope, and tells her of a myth, that if one folds 1000 paper cranes, ones wish would come true.

Sadako is determined to live in desperation she starts folding cranes frantically, she only has the strength and the time to get to 644 cranes, before dying six months later.

Following her death, Sadako's friends and family finished 1,000 cranes for her and bury it with her.

Sadako becomes a symbol of peace, hope and a sad memory and a reminder of us to be compassionate to all living things and the environment

In 1958, a statue of Sadako is built at Hiroshima Peace Memorial, and in her hands is a golden crane. The plaque that is on the memorial states:

"This is our cry.  This is our prayer.  Peace in the world."

One Thousand Origami Cranes School Fundraiser

This weekend I am folding one thousand paper cranes at my kid’s school as a fund raiser for Japan, we are also baking vegan chocolate chip cookies for the bake sale.  I need to see if I can get an Origami cookie cutter….

These sort of catastrophic events bring the world together, and remind us of the frailty of life and the need to support each other.  Our shallow worlds are given a shock, and we are humbled. Diverse people show genuine concern, empathy and compassion towards the suffering of others regardless of country, caste or creed.

I was at a donation collection table last week, when a Japanese colleague dropped by and asked me, “do you have family in Japan?” as I was the only non-Japanese at the collection table, I said

"Yes, I have the brotherhood of man there in Japan..."

My wish if I could have it...

I ponder what I would wish for if I it was magically granted to me after folding 1,000 paper origami cranes.

This is a very difficult question to answer, from a spiritual perspective, there is no such thing as a random event, and everything is precise like clockwork, even the darkest of days, has an underlying cause and reason.  It’s difficult to comprehend this with our limited view of the world.  Saying this, witnessing the suffering is also too hard to swallow...I quote his holiness the Dalai Lama:

I find hope in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe...Dalai Lama

After pondering this, I know the answer; I have known the answer all along.

Like the thousands of people that go to Sodaka's monument and that pray for world peace, instead I pray silently for inner peace, for myself and everyone in the world.

At the bottom my heart I know that:

If people are in tune with themselves, they will be in tune with the environment and sensitive to their demands on it, and so will others around them including corporations and government.

Disasters could be minimized; shortcuts would not be taken at the expense of saving money or self gratification:

The spent fuel rods of six years would not have been left in Fukushima reactor, the radioactivity would have been six times less damaging if care was taken.

Millions of animals would not be slaughtered ever year for the sake of high protein foods which places an enormous tax on our environment, in terms of competing land, food, water requirements and production of methane.  Methane is 21 times stronger as a greenhouse gas than CO2.  100 million tons of methane is produced every year 85% of this comes from livestock.

If people are in tune with themselves, this would automatically flow through to Order, Love and Harmony in the world and the environment.

We would realize our real needs are a lot smaller than our desires and that underneath our superficialities and egos, we are all but one single, living, breathing entity...Planet Earth!

Global Compassion for Japan

Picture Earth South Pole by FlyingSinger under Creative Commons

I am lost for words to describe the grief that Japan is going through, its hard to imagine why this has happened, it is a wake up call for the world, it teaches us the lesson of Global Compassion and of Respect for our Planet and all those who occupy it.

I sit here and ponder, what possible good can come out of this disaster where more than 10,000 people are expected to be dead, and there is a deep uncertainty of whats going to happen with nuclear reactor radiation leaks and its prolonged impact on the Japan and the rest of the world.  The world is not as isolated as it once was, there are deep economic, environmental relationships that interrelate the world.

I am overwhelmed by the compassionate responses of individual, organisation and country support for countries in Crisis. My employer pledged to double the donations collected for charity.  When I was sitting on the donation collection table at lunch time this week, I was astounded by the generosity of individuals and the diversity of them.

Master Li once said to me "The human has a core Dan Tien (Qi Energy Repository around the navel) that need to be kept in tune, to keep the person healthy, the world also has a Dan Tien, if that goes out of balance, there is no telling what will happen".  The events of the past cannot be coincidental, there is just too many natural disasters that are happening to frequently at all parts of the world, very close together.

Lets take a few:

I want to elaborate on the link between the individual and the global Dan Tiens.

A organisation of whatever scale can be thought of as a larger living breathing thing, so the natural laws that apply to an individual also apply to the organisation.

Now lets take a simple example:
- A drug addict destroys oneself and those connected around him.
- A responsible spiritual person is a blessing to oneself and those around her.

Whats the difference between the two?  Both have been given the same human capacities, both may have started with the same disadvantages.  The drug addict may even be better off financially, but has no true happiness, take for example Hollywood or rock stars.

What differentiates us is our values and our degree of self awareness, or the lack of it!
Garbage in, Garbage out, the quality of the input determines the quality of the output!

If we take the same logic and apply it at a global level.  What genuine positive values is there in cumulative terms? What cumulative self awareness is there? What exploitation is going on; on humans, on animals (mindless exploitation for meat), on poorer countries, on the environment?  Do we really think all this exploitation, pain and suffering will be swept under the carpet?

There is either a lack of mindfulness of our actions or just plan greed and exploitation at all levels, even so called religious organisations, that have their own interests at heart!

What we need is Self Transcendence, of our own Ego and selfish needs and gratifications...That is probably there in a small percentage of the world's population, God bless their Souls!  The rest of the population are simply being controlled by larger organisations acting with their interests or runaway organisational "Ego".

My blog is a rather strong one this time, but I feel that we really need to wake up.  I was telling my wife the other day over a breakfast conversation.

The sad thing is that human and organisations will only make changes if there is something that forces them to, otherwise they will go their merry way.
Karma's a bitch, but its there to teach us that the consequences of our action be it at an individual or global level, in that sense it also purifies us

My heart goes out to those affected in Japan. This article does not condemn them in any way, it condemns the individual and global lack of self awareness, integrity, and social responsibilities to the environment, and all those who occupy it.

There is a native american saying "We don't own the land, we borrow it from our children"

Meditation changes you, and how you feel about things, I certainly did would not have responded this way 20 years ago, any disaster like this, would have just been a passing distraction that would have made me uncomfortable for 5 minutes.  Life is unpredictable, we don't know when our time will be up, and how it will end...

I would like to finish with some inspiring quotes:

I find hope in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe..... Dalai Lama

An untroubled mind,
No longer seeking to consider
What is right and what is wrong,
A mind beyond judgements,
Watches and understands.
~Buddha~

In our deepest moments of struggle~ frustration~ fear~confusion, we are being called upon to reach in and touch our hearts. Then we will know what to do~what to say~how to be. What is right is always in our deepest heart of hearts ~It is from the deepest part of our hearts that we are capable of reaching out & touching another humanbeing. It is, after all, one heart touching another heart. ~Roberta Sage Hamilton.

The way of Love, Compassion and Self Awareness is the only path that will heal our Individual and Global Sickness..

I am in awe of the Egyptian People

I am in awe of the Egyptian people, and celebrate their victory with them! I am overjoyed with tears...I was in the middle of a two hour meeting at work dealing with a critical issue, my wife sent me the following message:
"Mubarak has officially resigned!!! He has stepped down!!!!! Yay!!!"

I had to stop the meeting:  "Sorry I have to interrupt to announce a historical moment!" One of them said:  "I don't care what happens now with these issues, you have just made my day!"
My wife expressed the same sediments: "The people of Egypt are amazing! In awe of their perseverance...unity...humanity and peaceful nature! Peace to all"

I could not have said it better, the Egyptians shown courage, peaceful co-operation and perseverance, humanity, in the face of oppression, and injustice. They set an example for all of us to follow, the power of human spirit and standing up for whats just, for the common good of the people.

We need to take it the next step, the good of the planet, and this all starts with ourselves, by gaining control over our own minds.  Letting the inner light of truth shine out from within us, and aligning ourselves to that.

The follows is a great summary of events leading up to this moment, where Mubarak was forced to step down.

As in Heaven, Let it be on Earth...

Every single thing in existence depends on the exhalation and inhalation of the divine creative power, all are but one manifestation of it like a wave rising from an ocean...

Intolerance because of religion, country, race, creed, caste and even species or anything else discriminatory is a result of plain ignorance of this fact.

We are all but one...

Wishing you Peace, Compassion, Thoughtfulness, Purpose and last but not least Love,

Kirpal
