They say a step of a thousand miles starts with the first step, here is the first blog on the "Zen Manager", which focuses on bringing spiritual wisdom into the workplace.
Why do I need values?
I know from a spiritual perspective having strong guiding positive values is critical for an individual, I believe it is just as important at an organisational level. At least half of our lives are spent on work, so why make this a painful long drawn experience at work. Work is a place to learn and grow, as well as recharge with close relationships outside family.

I am responding to the phrase “Having strong values is critical for an individual”. Having values is not a choice: everyone lives his/her values. The choice is the set of values. Values depend on the cultural heritage, education and economic standards, but they are present in every wake moment. The challenge is to be aware of the values that we live by. Values are very personal. Who will say that honesty is not one of his/her value? However, honesty for one person maybe never tell a lie, which is already a lie in itself. For another person, one incident of shoplifting would not violate his/her value of honesty.
ReplyDeleteDid you mean “Being clear about one’s values is critical for an individual”?
Hi Olga,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the feedback. I agree everyone one has a set of values, but not many people are clear about it.
What I really meant is having a set of guiding values. This may be different from the internal set of values. I feel that they are important to protect oneself from the actions of negative values.
A person may have clear negative values, I will update blog to indicate that a person should have clear positive guiding values.
Thanks again, your feedback is very much appreciated.
Catch you next week,
Regards
Kirpal
